The UV and X-ray Properties of a Large, Diverse Sample of Optically Selected Quasars
Abstract
We have compiled the largest current sample of 4000 optically selected quasars (QSOs) which have also been observed in X-rays with ROSAT, Chandra, and/or XMM-Newton. The first 1000 sources are drawn from a diverse set of QSO surveys, including the SDSS, 2QZ, 6QZ, and Hamburg surveys, with a magnitude limit of $i \la 17$. The other 3000 quasars are selected from the SDSS DR5 spectroscopic quasar catalog and DR6 photometric catalog without a magnitude limit, which significantly increases the densely sampled coverage of the luminosity-redshift plane. We characterize the relation between UV and X-ray luminosity in detail, test for additional physical factors that influence this relation, and constrain the relative variation between UV and X-rays. These results have important consequences for our understanding of the uniformity and structure of QSO accretion processes. We gratefully acknowledge the support of NASA LTSA grant NAG5-13035.
